Address: ul. Św. Marcin 80/82 , 61-809 Poznań
The most impressive building of the Imperial District. The castle was built for the last German emperor and King of Prussia William II. It was designed by Franz Schwechten, but many elements were introduced at the request of the emperor, who personally established a detailed plan for his new residence. The castle was built on the plan of an irregular polygon in the Neo-Roman style, considered by the emperor to be the most Germanic and representing the splendor of the Holy Empire. The new headquarters was to confirm once and for all Wielkopolska's belonging to the Reich. The main building, located in the southern part, consisted of two wings - the western one, which was larger and housed living quarters, and the eastern one, in which the representative rooms were located. On the ground floor of the western part there were rooms of the marshal of the court, housekeeper and other members of the imperial retinue. The first floor was occupied by the imperial couple's apartments and a private chapel in the tower. The most magnificent room of the representative wing was the Throne Room referring to Byzantine basilicas. Large windows lit up on three sides, surrounded by arcades supported by columns. Eight statues depicting German emperors were placed between the arches, and in the recess of the central arcade an oriental imperial throne. Above them were galleries for guests and the orchestra. The entrance to this part of the Castle was from ul. Wałowa. At the back of the palace towards ul. Berlińska was a garden closed from the east and north with service rooms as well as a stable, garages and a coach house. To this day, the Rose Fountain stands the Fountain of Lions modeled on a similar fountain from the Patio de los Leones in the Alhambra in Grenada. From ul. Św. Marcin's main building was separated by a yard surrounded by a wrought iron fence. Currently, the castle building houses and actively operates the '' Zamek Culture Center '', a venue for exhibitions, exhibitions, and artistic meetings.
