The heart of the early medieval Kalisz, which is probably the cradle of the first Polish rulers - Piasts, was a stronghold located among the backwaters of the Prosna River in the Zawodzie district. For the first time in written sources, he was mentioned by Gall Anonim in 1106. His past was recognized quite accurately as a result of excavations. Currently, the area of the early medieval castle in Kalisz - Zawodzie is the Archaeological Reserve of the District Museum of the Kalisz Land. In the reserve, you can get acquainted with relics of the early medieval castle and the effects of reconstruction work, as well as see two exhibitions - multimedia devoted to the past of the castle and ethnographic exhibition presented in a residential building from the late 18th century. There are also numerous outdoor events such as: "Archaeological Fair" and "Kupała Night" (in June), "Piastowska Feast" (in August) and "Książęce Honey Harvest" (in September).
