The museum presents collections related to the Polish early Middle Ages and the history of Gniezno and the surrounding area. The building was erected in the years 1970-1978. The institution was established in 1956 as the Gniezno Branch of the Archaeological Museum in Poznań. In 1973, it became an independent unit, changing its name to the Museum of the Origins of the Polish State. Exhibits that possess material culture objects from the Middle Ages to modern times, art, monuments and archives related to the history of Gniezno. The museum has six permanent exhibitions: - Medieval Wielkopolska - Medieval Gniezno - Modern Gniezno - Romanesque sculpture in Poland - The weapons of bygone centuries - Painted history and temporary exhibitions, two of which are of special importance: - Exhibition 'Gothic and Renaissance tiles' from 2003 - found during excavations, originating from finds made by Czesław Strzyżewski in Janków Dolny during several seasons and from around the Lech Hill in Gniezno. The tiles were characterized by a wealth of decorative motifs and a variety of performance techniques. They are still presented as part of the permanent exhibition. The exhibition was recorded by two book publications - the exhibition catalog and the development of local tiles. - 'Ars Scribendi' exhibition from 2008 on the art of writing in medieval Poland, devoted to literature from the earliest years. Over twenty works of European writer and ministry were collected, including an illuminated manuscript from the Carolingian era, the Bull of Gniezno of Pope Innocent II from 1136, the 11th-century Golden Code of Gniezno, the Bible of Jarosław Skotnicki and documents issued by Casimir the Great and the first Polish rulers of the Jagiellon dynasty.
